BELGICA OBSCURA

A rare thing, Belgian genre films and their makers, yet they exist! This year too, some brave ones managed to realise their dreams and visions in the form of diverse short films, all within the fantastic genre. Belgica Obscura collected for you a selection from their country’s modest offer.

Over the years, Belgica Obscura managed to collect nearly 200 Belgian horror (co)productions, going from big budget pictures, student films, to inevitable homemade splatter and amateur flicks. Vampires, psychopaths, aliens, demons, zombies, even cardboard prehistoric creatures and more! They will bring you a small selection of short films to show you the diversity of what Belgica Obscura stands for.

We have heard that there aren’t that many dinosaurs, vampires and zombies this time, but at least now we’ve got your attention!

From 1996 until today, 33 violent murders are perpetrated during the Halloween period in Belgium by a serial killer who calls himself "the clown". We are on the eve of Halloween. Vincent hates this party and for good reason: his father committed suicide during this period. That morning, he receives a call from his friend Alice to babysit her cats because she has to be away for a few days. On the way, he realizes that he is being chased by a strange, masked man. Very quickly, he realizes that this stranger covered in a clown mask is prowling around Alice's place, determined to enter.

Hotel Poseidon volgt 24 uur in het leven van Dave (Tom Vermeir), een uitgebluste veertiger die in het bouwvallige hotel van zijn overleden vader woont. Hij vult er zijn dagen met luisteren naar ruis op een oude walkman, het ontlopen van zijn dominante moeder (Tania Van der Sanden) en het incasseren van vernederingen door zijn vriendin (Ruth Becquart). Dave wil liefst met rust worden gelaten... maar de komst van een mysterieuze gast (Anneke Sluiters) en een onbetrouwbare vriend (Dominique Van Malder) zet een reeks magische en surreële gebeurtenissen in gang... A day in the life of reluctant hotel owner Dave – a man troubled by nightmares, his neighbor, his friends and love. Dave’s existence is hopeless. His days and nights blend into each other as he wanders vacantly through the halls of the abandoned and dilapidated Hotel Poseidon, which he inherited from his deceased father. When a young woman knocks on the hotel’s door looking for a room, while Dave’s best friend wants to throw a party in the backroom and a recurring dream haunts him, a surreal and grisly ordeal is set in motion.

After an argument and fight with a wealthy one night stand in a posh hotel, young hustler Chris finds himself trapped inside. With nowhere to go and the cops closing in on the hotel fast, he wanders into "Suite 16" in a fit of despair. Inside, a handicapped and wheelchair-bound Glover (Pete Postlethwaite) is held captive for the evening once discovered by Chris. However, things change the next day when Glover informs Chris that the woman he slept with is now dead; and that he surely will be sought out for her murder. Lonely and bored, Glover offers to shelter Chris for awhile while the cuts and bruises from the previous nights' escapades have time to heal.

Malpertuis is a labyrinth where characters issued from the Greek mythology are made prisoners by Cassavius. He manages to keep them (as well as his nephew and niece) as prisoners even after his death, through a binding testament. As the nephew unravels the mystery, we find out he cannot escape the house because Malpertuis is far more significant than we were led to believe. A young sailor finds himself trapped in the labyrinthine mansion of his occultist uncle, along with a number of eccentric and mysterious relatives who all seem to be harbouring a dark secret.
